Accessible by Design: A Bathroom & Laundry Transformation in Pelham Manor, NY
Accessible, functional, practical, ease of use, and convenience were the words that came up most when we first began discussing this bathroom remodel in Pelham Manor. Aesthetics and beauty mattered too — but interestingly, they weren’t at the top of the list. They were part of the conversation, not the driver.
That didn’t surprise us.
Over the past several years, we’ve seen a clear shift in how homeowners define a successful renovation. People want homes that work better — spaces that reduce daily friction, improve routines, and make life easier. Open layouts, smarter technology, and thoughtful adjacencies aren’t trends anymore; they’re expectations. Bathrooms and laundry rooms, in particular, have become central to this shift.
The Real Problem: Laundry in the Wrong Place
Like many homes in Pelham Manor, this family’s laundry room was located in the basement — three floors away from where all the bedrooms were. Every load meant hauling baskets up and down stairs, day after day. They knew there had to be a better way, but couldn’t see how it was possible within the existing layout.
When we were brought in to design the bathroom, the question quickly became bigger than tile or fixtures:
Could we bring the laundry upstairs — into an already small bathroom — without disrupting the flow of the home?
And if we could, how do we make it feel intentional, seamless, and livable?
Designing with Real Life in Mind
Solving this meant more than clever layout work. It required trust.
Any solution would affect not just the bathroom, but closets, the hallway, and part of the primary bedroom. Construction would take place in the most private part of the home, while a family with young children — and a very loved dog — continued daily life around it. Cleanliness, logistics, and communication mattered just as much as design.
The Design Strategy
To make this work, several key moves had to happen.
We began by eliminating the existing bathroom entry door, boxing it in and repurposing the space to house a stackable washer and dryer. This decision alone unlocked the rest of the plan.
Behind the laundry units, we created space for a Kohler tub, complete with a custom-designed niche for everyday bath essentials. White Carrara marble wraps the undermount tub and cascades down the side in a waterfall detail, forming a built-in ledge that doubles as seating and discreet storage for children’s bath toys. A glass enclosure completes the tub area without visually crowding the room.
Next, we reworked the “his” closet, strategically bumping into it to accommodate a new vanity. The result feels anything but compromised — crystal knobs, a statement chandelier, and dual medicine cabinets bring character and symmetry to the space. To maintain natural light, the existing bathroom window was resized and shifted slightly, still flooding the room with daylight.
Because the bathroom entry moved four feet down the hallway, we introduced a frosted glass door, allowing light from the bathroom window to pass through and brighten the corridor — a small detail with a big impact.
Finally, the “his” closet itself was fully reconfigured. Even after giving up some square footage for the vanity, we increased usable storage by reorganizing the interior and adding a pocket door for easier access.
A Space That Feels Like It Was Always There
By the time paint, LED lighting, and additional storage were complete, the transformation felt effortless — as if the bathroom and laundry had always been designed this way.
The ultimate confirmation came from the homeowners themselves. They told us they no longer use the basement laundry room at all.
And honestly — what’s the point?
