Kitchen Remodel in Mount Vernon, NY — From Frustration to Function

Making the most of limited kitchen space is one of our core strengths, especially in older Westchester County homes where layout—not square footage—is often the real challenge.

In this project, the homeowners had lived with a kitchen that never quite worked, despite being centrally located and surrounded by key living spaces. The kitchen connected to the backyard, garage, dining room, living room, and home office—an ideal placement on paper—but poor circulation, awkward proportions, and inefficient use of space made daily life frustrating.

This renovation focused on correcting the design mistakes rather than expanding unnecessarily, transforming an underperforming kitchen into a highly functional, well-connected space designed around how the family actually lives.

Despite having a walk-in pantry, a powder room, and dedicated storage, the kitchen was difficult to work in. Circulation was awkward, counter space was limited where it mattered most, and the layout didn’t support how the family used the space day to day.

The redesign began with identifying what did work. The range was already positioned well, so we kept it in place, centered it properly on the wall, and upgraded to a 36-inch range paired with improved ventilation. The sink location also made sense, so it remained where it was, but the surrounding layout was reworked to support a new triple-slider door. This change dramatically improved natural light and opened up clear views to the backyard, immediately making the kitchen feel more connected and open.

One of the family’s main requests was an island and additional countertop space. Through careful reconfiguration, we were able to incorporate a generously sized island while also increasing overall storage. A dedicated refrigerator for beverages (very specifically not a wine refrigerator) was seamlessly integrated, along with a glass-front cabinet and wraparound cabinetry extending into the dining area.

By reconfiguring the layout rather than enlarging the room, we were able to add an island, increase countertop space, and integrate additional storage—three of the most requested features in high-end kitchen remodels.

With these changes, the kitchen finally began to function the way it should. The layout now supports cooking, gathering, and everyday use without compromise, allowing the space to serve the family rather than work against them.

This is a common issue we see in kitchen remodels across Westchester County—spaces that technically have enough square footage, but fail because the layout doesn’t support real-world use. Kitchen Remodeling Services in Westchester County
