Project Description
Lower-Level Poolside Kitchen Remodel | New Rochelle, NY
This lower-level kitchen sits at the heart of a home built for entertaining. Large gatherings often spill out toward the pool, and this walk-out level was already designed to support that lifestyle — with surround sound, LED lighting, a fireplace, a pool table, and a wide-open layout that truly comes alive at night.
There was just one problem: the kitchen didn’t belong.
The original kitchen felt dated, disconnected, and out of sync with the energy of the space around it. While the homeowners knew it would eventually need attention, they weren’t looking for a full gut renovation. What they wanted instead was a smart, intentional revamp — one that would allow the kitchen to finally hold its own within this entertainment-driven environment.
Though compact in size, the kitchen was strategically positioned to function as the hub of the entire level. Our goal was to design it so it felt open, social, and visually strong enough to coexist with everything else happening in the room.
Designing for Interaction, Not Storage
The first move was removing the kitchen table altogether. In its place, we introduced a peninsula that immediately improved flow and functionality. This single change created space for sculptural pendant lighting, comfortable counter seating, and finally gave purpose to a wine cooler the homeowners had purchased years earlier but never had a place for.
Because this was not the home’s main kitchen, wall storage was intentionally minimized. Instead, we focused on openness and interaction. A freestanding chimney hood was designed to stand on its own, positioned just left of the window to keep sightlines open and preserve the airy feel of the space.
Designing for Interaction, Not Storage
Elevating the Entertaining Experience
To further reinforce the entertaining function of the room, we transformed an otherwise unused wall into a buffet-style feature with integrated wine storage. This addition brought both function and visual interest to an area that would have remained empty — adding just the right amount of “glitz” without overwhelming the room.
A Statement Countertop That Commands Attention
Every design decision mattered here, especially since the kitchen is visible the moment you enter the home. A waterfall-edge countertop was the natural choice, but the stone selection was critical. We chose a material with bold movement, carefully aligned through the 45-degree waterfall edge to create a dramatic, continuous flow. The result is a statement piece that anchors the entire space.
Nothing was overlooked. For this kitchen to truly claim its territory within such a dynamic setting, it had to be intentional, confident, and beautifully executed.
