Mount. Vernon Kitchen Remodel – Designed to Cook and Entertain

 “BEFORE” PHOTOS:

After years of searching for the right kitchen design, this Mt. Vernon family was close to giving up. They had seen countless layouts that looked fine on paper but never truly worked for the way they lived. The existing kitchen felt closed off, disconnected from the dining space, and incapable of supporting what mattered most to them—cooking, hosting, and enjoying time together.

When they reached out to us, it was clear this wasn’t about swapping cabinets or updating finishes. They needed a kitchen remodel that fit their lifestyle, respected the flow of their home, and finally made the space feel intentional.

Every kitchen—and every family—is different. One-size-fits-all layouts rarely work, and in this Mt. Vernon home, that became obvious immediately. The previous design tried to force the kitchen into a “standard” mold, and the result was a space that felt restrictive instead of welcoming.

One of the first and most impactful decisions was removing the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. While opening the space was important, it wasn’t enough on its own. The challenge was re-integrating the kitchen so it felt like it belonged—open, but grounded.

We relocated the range to anchor the room visually and functionally, placing it against a large feature wall. A custom copper hood became the focal point, paired with a herringbone tile backsplash that tied the entire composition together. The goal wasn’t flash—it was balance.

Next came the refrigerator. Its placement dictated everything that followed. By positioning it where it could blend into the cabinetry, we were able to unlock the rest of the layout and design a generous peninsula where a wall once stood. The oversized stone surface provides seating for four, storage on both sides, and a natural gathering point for guests.

To keep the space feeling light, we avoided upper cabinets on the peninsula wall and allowed natural light to flow freely from the rear of the home. A discreet picture-frame TV was incorporated, maintaining a clean aesthetic while supporting everyday living.

Entertaining was a non-negotiable requirement, and wine storage became the final piece of the puzzle. By reclaiming unused space from an adjacent powder room, we created a recessed wine display with custom racking, bronze-framed glass doors, and integrated LED lighting. Functional, elegant, and entirely purposeful.

The remodel was completed with upgraded windows, a large sliding door, a dedicated wine and beverage cooler, and a cabinet layout favoring lower storage to reduce visual weight. The result is a kitchen that feels larger, brighter, and more connected—without encroaching on the dining room.

Both spaces now work together naturally, each enhancing the other in a way the original layout never could.
