Project Description

Kitchen Remodel in Pelham Manor, NY — Dancing by the Window.

The first thing we learned about this family had nothing to do with cabinets, appliances, or finishes. It was about a habit. Mom and daughter would stand by the kitchen window, music playing, dancing together while looking out into the backyard. That moment—simple, personal, unplanned—ended up shaping the entire direction of the project in this Pelham Manor home

When they reached out to us, the goal was originally a kitchen remodel. It had been on their mind for years. They had gathered estimates, explored ideas, and repeatedly hit the same wall: the numbers didn’t align with what they wanted to achieve. Each time, the project was pushed aside. Eventually, they decided to stop circling the idea and finally move forward.

Looking Beyond the Kitchen

The kitchen sat between the dining room and the family room, boxed in by walls on both sides. From the moment we walked the space, it was clear that replacing cabinets or finishes alone wouldn’t solve the underlying issues. The kitchen didn’t work because the layout around it didn’t work.

Any meaningful change meant rethinking not just the kitchen, but the rooms that touched it. Once walls came down, those adjoining spaces would no longer be secondary—they would frame the kitchen and define how it was experienced. This wasn’t a single-room upgrade anymore. It was a shared interior problem that needed a coordinated solution.

When the Family Room Took Center Stage

Once the walls came down, the family room—previously closed off—became visually central to the home. Its role shifted from background space to focal point.

We built out a feature wall to house a large television, with a linear gas fireplace below. Open shelving and concealed storage flanked the wall, all integrated into a staggered three-dimensional white brick surface that runs floor to ceiling. At night, lighting brings out the texture of the brick and highlights the live-edge mantle the homeowners personally selected.

The Powder Room (A Small Space with an Important Role)

With the kitchen and living areas undergoing such a dramatic transformation, leaving the powder room untouched no longer made sense. Located just off the hallway leading into the kitchen, it suddenly sat along one of the home’s most active paths.

Rather than overdesigning it, the goal here was balance. The powder room was updated to complement the new layout while referencing elements of the home’s original character. It became a supporting space—quietly cohesive, functional, and intentionally finished—rather than an afterthought in an otherwise reimagined

Finishing the Story

Throughout the project, decisions were guided by how much value could be created without excess. By reworking the layout instead of expanding it, and by choosing materials and details that carried visual weight, the home was transformed well within a mid-size kitchen remodel range—something many had said couldn’t be done.

The Result

The finished space supports the way this family actually lives. The kitchen is open, but not exposed. The rooms flow, but still have definition. The backyard view remains part of everyday life. And yes—the space by the window is still there for dancing.
