Project Description
Small Kitchen Remodel in Riverdale NY
This small kitchen remodel in Riverdale optimized an existing apartment footprint to maximize function, light, and resale value without relocating plumbing or mechanical systems. The design focused on appliance-driven planning, vertical storage, and visual openness within strict condo renovation constraints.
This kitchen was simply too small for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment—and its location made expansion nearly impossible. Structural changes or relocating mechanicals would have required extraordinary cost with little to no return on investment, especially in a condo setting. The homeowner’s goal was clear: optimize the kitchen within its existing footprint and maximize resale value.
As with many apartment, condo, and co-op renovations, there were strict limitations. No mechanicals could be moved, and even if they could, building management restrictions ruled it out. These are the realities of apartment living—but they’re also where smart design matters most.
When we walked the space, we saw the challenges immediately. But more importantly, we saw opportunity.
Designing Around One Critical Decision
The entire layout hinged on a single, deliberate choice: the refrigerator.
Once that appliance was selected, the rest of the kitchen design followed. We relocated it to the opposite wall—adjacent to the sink—so we could tap into the existing water line without altering plumbing. Depth was non-negotiable: the refrigerator had to remain exactly 24 inches deep to preserve openness at the entry and avoid visual congestion, especially since it sits across from a full-height pantry.
While this configuration isn’t typical, it allowed us to reclaim valuable space and visually open the kitchen toward the dining area and the apartment’s most important feature—the view.
Making Every Inch Work Harder
With the refrigerator placement finalized, we re-positioned the sink, dishwasher, and range, then wrapped the cabinetry around existing columns to fully integrate them into the space rather than letting them interrupt it.
We used 36-inch-high cabinets, installed closer to the ceiling than standard layouts, increasing storage while making the room feel taller and more expansive. This also allowed the faucet to sit comfortably below the cabinets—an often-overlooked but critical detail in compact kitchens.
To further enhance the sense of space, both knee walls were lowered so the countertops could extend over them. Removing that visual “stop” line allowed the kitchen to flow outward, adding usable prep space and creating the illusion of a longer, more open room.
Every inch mattered—and every inch was intentional.
Project Constraints & Smart Solutions
Constraints
-
Apartment / condo building with strict management rules
-
No relocation of plumbing, gas, or electrical
-
Tight footprint with limited natural light
-
Expansion would not yield a reasonable return on investment
Project Constraints & Smart Solutions
Solutions
-
Designed the entire layout around a single critical appliance (24″-deep refrigerator)
-
Repositioned appliances using existing plumbing lines
-
Wrapped cabinetry around structural columns to reclaim lost space
-
Raised cabinet installation height to increase storage and visual openness
-
Lowered knee walls to extend countertop depth and visually lengthen the kitchen
Light, Function, and Resale Value
White cabinetry was chosen for exactly what it does best: brighten, open, and visually expand a compact space—especially important given the kitchen’s interior location. The effect was immediate and dramatic.
The final details elevated both daily use and resale appeal:
-
Pantry roll-out shelving
-
Double recycling pull-out
-
Refined hardware
-
LED under-cabinet lighting
-
Quartz countertops
-
Classic backsplash tile
-
Grey linen-tone flooring
The transformation was so effective that while we were photographing the finished space, potential buyers walked in and headed straight for the kitchen, commenting that it felt perfectly designed for the apartment.
And as a finishing touch, the kitchen now looks out toward a stunning view of the George Washington Bridge, seen from this beautiful fourth-floor Riverdale home.
Projects like this reflect the level of planning, coordination, and execution required to deliver a successful renovation. As part of our work across the region, we continue to refine our approach through hands-on experience in kitchen remodeling throughout Westchester County.
