…THE BIG CHILL”…

…”The Big Chill out”…

This was a beautiful apartment in one of the most coveted building in white plains, Nice high tall ceilings greeted you when you walk in. Absolutely one of the best units in the building even if it was not on the top floor. You can tell that some work went into it to keep it spectacular and very well maintained. The kitchen however was another story, not well thought out, not much went into making it fit in white the style of the unit, unfortunately, this is what we see on the regular. It looks like the designers of these units was trying to fit 2 functional spaces into one tight room and as a result, ruin the functionality of both of them. Then to compound that, they choose materials and finishes that does not fit in with the unit. Looks like they bought them in bulks and just put them in all of the units regardless of the design and style.

Our client has been trying for some time to find someone who can bottle up the feel of that home and put it into the kitchen in a such a way so as you move from one space to the other, to the other, it would all feel united, while at the same time, being able to design a kitchen that would be the envy of all those in that building.

We were called in for a consult and soon as we walked in, we can immediately see the frustration on the kitchen face, it was Locked into a room off the right side, away from everything and everyone and was waiting there for years it seems for someone to set it free. The room was dark due to a large part of the cabinet finishes that was clashing with the dark floors, frosted glass metal cabinets and then a peninsular that totally cut off any chance it had to make the room feel larger than it really was. Lots was going on there in that room, this was definitely and after thought.

We got to work on re-designing and rethinking the space, we were limited with what we can do because of not being able to move things around but that didn’t stop us from making a statement piece kitchen and that was not going to stop us now! Our client gave us the greenlight to have our way with the space and that we did. We tear out all of the old cabinets, and flooring, kept most of the room in tack, kept the location of all the appliances and then started to design a space that would truly transform this kitchen and bring it in line with everything else that was already going on in the house.

We took advantage of those beautiful high tall ceilings and built the cabinets to go all the way up, making that hand shake between the kitchen and the ceiling which was years overdue. Because we didn’t have the width to feel the depth of the kitchen, we lightened the top of the cabinets with glass to make sure it does not feel too top heavy, we increased the size of the 30” range over to a 36” version so that it was a better scale and created a better balance over the existing 30” range, you would never know it but we kept the refrigerator, and wrapped it in a built in side panels that bought it in line with what was going on in that space.

The peninsular was a distraction, and also locked up the potential for the room, so we removed it and created a kitchen island instead, which opened up the room to the other side for a much more seamless transition. The kitchen was much larger than the old one but we didn’t want it to feel that way, so we design it with a mixed of open shelving that tied back into the cabinets, glass and lights and floating cabinets as well which extend all the way to the kitchen nook area, which provides alternative and mix storage solutions. Then come s the BIG CHILL. The paint color that was needed to bring this altogether, by Sherwin Williams. The client knew one thing from the jump; she did not want a white kitchen. The client also did not want a grey kitchen. After scoring thought colors and colors upon colors,  finally settled on the big Chill. I think this is going to be one of the cool new cabinet colors. You have to really see this to appreciate the beauty, pictures are worth 1000 words but seeing this kitchen in person would certainly entice and lit up all of your senses.

Another happy client!! Now onto the next.
