Project Description

Full Kitchen and Apartment Remodel in Harrison, NY

Converting a One-Bedroom Into a Functional Two-Bedroom Home

When we were handed the keys to this Harrison apartment, we were also handed a list of goals — and a tight set of constraints.

The homeowners knew what they wanted, but not how to get there. They asked us to walk the space, understand its limitations, and come back with a plan that could solve several problems at once. The unit had clearly seen better days, but we looked past the condition and focused on what the space could become.

This project wasn’t just a kitchen remodel. It was a full apartment transformation.

The Real Challenges

From the very beginning, this project wasn’t about making cosmetic upgrades. It was about solving real spatial problems inside a very fixed footprint. Every design decision had to work harder than usual, because expanding the apartment wasn’t an option.

Three objectives guided the entire process:

  • Adding a second bedroom within an already limited footprint, without making the apartment feel cramped or compromised

  • Designing a larger, brighter, more functional kitchen that could finally support everyday living, cooking, and entertaining

  • Creating a true walk-in closet for the primary bedroom, improving storage without sacrificing comfort or circulation

Accomplishing all three at once — and doing so without expanding the apartment or sacrificing livability — required rethinking the layout from the ground up. Nothing could be treated as a standalone decision; each move had a ripple effect throughout the apartment.

The Real Challenges

Once we stepped back and studied the space as a whole, the real challenges became clear. The existing layout simply wasn’t working for how the homeowners wanted to live.

The kitchen was tucked away, undersized, and disconnected from the rest of the apartment. The dining area consumed valuable square footage without serving a real purpose. Storage was poorly distributed, and the bedroom layouts didn’t make efficient use of the available space.

Most importantly, trying to solve these problems individually would never work. Enlarging the kitchen without addressing the bedroom count wouldn’t help. Adding a bedroom without rethinking circulation would make the apartment feel smaller. Improving storage without reworking the layout would only mask the issue.

The solution had to be holistic.

By approaching the apartment as a single system — rather than a series of isolated rooms — we were able to reorganize the layout in a way that made every square foot count. This mindset ultimately allowed the kitchen to become the focal point of the home, while simultaneously unlocking space for a second bedroom and a properly designed primary suite.

Video Transformation: Seeing the Layout Shift

Sometimes words and photos aren’t enough to fully explain how a layout transformation works. That’s why we documented this project on video.

The short walkthrough below shows how strategic layout changes — not added square footage — completely redefined how this apartment functions. Watching the transformation helps put the design decisions into perspective and shows how each move builds on the next.

Creating Bedroom #2 Without Expanding the Footprint

Next, we addressed the need for a second bedroom. By blocking in the original dining room doorway, we were able to fully enclose the space and convert it into a legitimate bedroom.

Because the mechanical systems were already in place — windows, heating, and lighting — the transition was seamless. The bonus? This change also allowed us to design a full wall-to-wall closet inside the new bedroom, dramatically improving storage.

Rethinking the Primary Bedroom and Closet

The original bedroom was generously sized, but the closet was undersized. By introducing an L-shaped wall and reallocating a small portion of the bedroom footprint, we created a true walk-in closet without compromising comfort.

Even after the adjustment, the bedroom easily accommodates a queen-size bed, nightstands, wall-mounted TV, seating, and clear circulation space. The difference came from rethinking furniture placement rather than adding square footage.

Collaboration and Execution

Projects like this only work with strong coordination across trades. This remodel came together through close collaboration with:

  • Reggie and the team at Premier Interiors

  • Rohan and the crew at RD Mechanical Services

Clear communication, tight scheduling, and shared accountability kept the project on track from start to finish.

The Result

What started as a dated one-bedroom apartment in Harrison, NY is now a thoughtfully designed two-bedroom home with a functional kitchen, smart storage, and a layout that truly works for modern living.

Another successful transformation — and another happy client.

Now onto the next.

Why This Matters for Harrison Homeowners

Homes and apartments in Harrison often have strong bones but layouts that no longer reflect how people actually live. Square footage is usually fixed, rooms are clearly defined, and storage is often an afterthought. As needs change, these homes can start to feel tight, inefficient, or disconnected — even when the overall size seems adequate.

This project is a clear example of what’s possible when layout comes first. Without expanding the apartment, we were able to rethink how space was allocated and make meaningful improvements where they mattered most: adding a second bedroom, creating a brighter and more functional kitchen, and improving storage in ways that support everyday life.

For homeowners exploring a kitchen remodel in Harrison, NY, or anywhere in the westchester county area this renovation shows that the best results don’t come from cosmetic upgrades alone. True transformation happens when circulation, proportion, and function are addressed together. Instead of forcing new finishes into a flawed plan, we focused on correcting the layout so the home could work as a whole.

In a market like Harrison, where efficiency and long-term livability matter, thoughtful design decisions add value well beyond the kitchen itself. This approach not only improves daily routines, but also creates flexibility for the future — something buyers and homeowners alike recognize immediately.
