This project began with an opportunity to rethink the entire first-floor layout. As part of a larger renovation that included the kitchen and powder room, the goal was to create a more open, connected living environment that better reflected how the homeowner wanted to use the space day to day.

The kitchen became the focal point of that transformation—both in its location and in how it would function within a new open-concept layout.

Designing an Open Concept That Actually Works

Opening walls is often the easy part. The real challenge is putting the space back together in a way that feels intentional.

Once separate rooms are combined, the kitchen, dining, and living areas must operate as one cohesive environment—balanced in scale, connected in flow, and functional from every angle.

This required careful planning around cabinetry layout, appliance positioning, seating, and circulation paths, all while maintaining clear access to adjacent living spaces and the outdoors.

The homeowner brought a bold perspective to the finish selections, choosing a dramatic backsplash that anchors the space visually. Paired with quartz surfaces featuring subtle crystal movement, the materials add depth and character without overwhelming the overall design.
