More and more homeowners are opting for tub-to-shower conversions, especially when another bathroom in the home already includes a tub. Since this house met that criterion, we removed the tub and installed a luxury walk-in shower—a smart choice that enhances both the aesthetic and usability of the space without compromising home value.

Smart Structural Changes

One of the most significant transformations involved structurally reframing the flooring to achieve a zero-threshold shower. Because the bathrooms shared a wet wall, both had to be demolished simultaneously to access the necessary plumbing. Once the walls were exposed, we shifted our attention to the existing subfloor. Portions of the subfloor were removed to access the joists, allowing us to rebuild with a precise pitch toward the back of the room. This eliminated the need for a bulky shower curb, creating a seamless, barrier-free entry—a feature that enhances both accessibility and design.

The plumbing layout was upgraded with an oversized 60” Kohler linear drain, carefully positioned so that once the large-format tiles were installed, the drain would blend seamlessly into the design. The result? A clean, uninterrupted look that creates the illusion that water disappears into the back wall—subtle, modern, and highly functional.

Next, we gutted the entire space, replaced the window to bring in more natural light, and spray-foamed the walls for energy-efficient insulation. One of the standout features of this remodel is the addition of heated flooring, including inside the shower. There’s no need to step out of a warm shower onto cold tiles—temperature consistency enhances the spa-like feel and overall luxury of the space.

Fortunately, Kohler stood behind their product—they sent a technician to verify the issue, overnighted a replacement, and even covered the cost of the damaged tile. Thanks to this quick resolution, we had everything back on track within a week.
